Filipino Recipe Reviews was an accident…that was meant to happen. I was looking for a new project I wanted to pursue and decided I wanted to create a presence on the web, and I was throwing around a few ideas to Leny, to get some feedback as to what type of website I should start.
First, it began by identifying my strengths and talents, and we started throwing around possible website names. Then, when would check GoDaddy to see if the domain name was available.
What started as a short conversation, turned into an impromptu brainstorming session to find my blog name and niche. We were focused and determined.
During this process, I asked Leny if she had any aspirations of starting her own blog.
She immediately said no way!
“I wouldn’t know what to write about, and I don’t have any skills or talents.” Of course, I disagreed, because everyone has some sort of talent, right? It just needs to be sifted out.
I told her she could write about shopping. She was good at that. Or traveling, makeup…
As I rattled off ideas, she abruptly blurted, “ I want to start a food blog!”
Great, now we have a starting point, except for one minor detail. You see, Leny is a fairly new cook. To know her, is to know that she didn’t start cooking until only 3 years ago.
Well into adulthood and living on her own, she managed to survive without as much as boiling her own water, by eating other peoples cooking or dining out. So when she mentioned food blog, naturally, I was skeptical…but encouraging.
So what’s the next best thing to food blog? Reviewing other people’s food recipes! Naturally, Filipino Recipe Reviews has evolved into much more than just a review site. We now do our own original versions of filipino recipes we love to eat, and our goal is to grow our recipe archive, so you too can cook and enjoy our food as much as we do.
Nowadays, Leny is a much better cook. And a food review blog was exactly what she needed to take her own cooking skills to the next level. But how do we get it started?
A GREAT IDEA
It started with an idea, some pre-planning, then backed up by action. That’s how this blog was created. And like all things that eventually come to existence, it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible resources we use to bring this blog to you daily.
Take a moment to review the resources below, that we personally use. There are no perfect products or services, but we feel these come close when it comes to quality, service and performance.
If you’ve thought about starting your own blog or website, we highly recommend you try these companies out.
Some of these are affillate companies, which means Leny and I will be compensated for our referral. We are upfront with this disclosure because we wouldn’t recommend ANY product or service that we have not personally tried or used ourselves.
We’re doing our part to promote their business, so more people can benefit from their service like we have. If you decide to purchase their product or service, they will pay us for the referral. And that’s only fair, would you agree?
A reputation is earned not bought, and we would not endorse these resources if we did not personally believe in them ourselves.
If you do decide to use these products or services, we would appreciate if you connect to their site through our links below. Thanks!
A top rated web hosting company. A few quick features would be unlimited domain hosting, 1-click blog installs, non-outsourced customer service…just to name a few. But the real benefit is the performance. Pages load fast and I have yet to experience any service disruption. I had and issue early in my service, where I wanted to change the domain name. This was tricky because it required me to manually transfer my blog contents from the old domain into the new one. Of course, I freaked out because I didn’t know what the heck to do. I decided to use their online chat help to walk me through the process. They were able to successfully process my request during my lunch hour, without me having to call them to further clarify my request.A side note, if you decide to change your primary domain after you set up your Bluehost account, it will take 2 days before the change will take effect. I suggest you make sure you know exactly what domain name you want to be as the primary, so you won’t have to go through this process.
A widely used and established web software, WordPress is the popular choice for most new and experienced bloggers. Best of all, it’s free. Most hosting companies today offer seamless WordPress installation, so you can get your blog up an running quick.
If WordPress is your house, then Thesis is your high-end interior designer. No joke. Thesis is a powerful WordPress theme framework, with an ability to fully customize your site, limited only by your imagination. Filipino Recipe Reviews is powered by Thesis, which I customized myself. I had no prior website-building experience and was able to create a decent looking, fully functional site. Some coding knowledge is required, but most of the codes you need to create the effect you want have already been created by others in the Thesis community. All you need to do is cut, paste and save. If you’re serious about doing your website right, we recommend getting Thesis.
- Google Feedburner
If you’re gonna start blog, what good is it if you don’t have anyone to share it with? We started FRR with the intention of sharing our reviews with family and friends, then reaching out the social web community. Feedburner was our obvious first choice, and our readership, like our budget, is small. It’s super easy to manage your subscribers. They only have to enter their email, type in a security code and press enter. That’s it. Now, any new posts that’s published with automatically be delivered to their email inboxes. Of course, they always have the option to cancel their subscription.
This is an email subscription service that I am conditionally approving. It’s a paid service, $20 monthly for less than 500 subscribers and goes up incrementally when your email subscriber base increases. I’ve read many blogs who swear by its services and after reviewing Aweber’s own website, I can see the value in having more customization options, compared to Feedburner. This decision is based on my need to give our subscribers the best content delivery system possible, while providing relevant information based on our member’s current interest level.
