My First Thanksgiving
Let me be honest..I am Filipino and I did not grow up with Thanksgiving. In the Philippines, we start celebrating the Christmas season early but no Thanksgiving. I have not heard of it not until I got here in the United States. I was 23 when I celebrated my first Thanksgiving. It was with my family in our 3-bedroom apartment where my mom and dad attempted to cook their first Thanksgiving Turkey. All of us did not know much about this well celebrated bird, more so cooking it. So after an hour, there was no bird on the table. We counted two..three..four..five hours and finally the bird is ready! And what a big bird!!! Little did I know that it will be my first and only turkey for a long, long time. After that Thanksgiving, my family and I are convinced that we are not big fans of Mr Big Bird.
Thanksgiving Filipino Style
As years went by, we began to embrace Thanksgiving like any other family here in the United States. Not just because we are here but because we are truly thankful for the many blessings and the life we have here in this country. So in our celebrations, we decide to stick with what we know and grew up with. No Mr. Big Bird with cranberry sauce, no pumpkin pies and egg noggs or Martha Stewart decors and plate settings…just a simple gathering of family and friends we have met along the way. We celebrate Thanksgiving, Filipino style!
